Be Aware of Utility Billing Scam

Monday, November 4, 2019 - The Sawyer County Sheriff’s Department is advising its residents to be vigilant of recent scams going around.  Authorities say they’ve received several complaints from residents, stating they have received phone calls from individuals that are claiming to be from local utility companies. The scammers will attempt to get the victims to give them financial information or payment, and if they don’t agree to hand over that information, the scammers will threaten to shut off their utilities. The Sheriff Department is reminding that utility companies will not operate in this way, and if you receive a similar call, don’t give out any information and to instead hang up and call your local utility company.  Authorities say you should contact local law enforcement if you become a scam victim.
