The cleanup has begun at the scene of an explosion and fire that killed a man Sunday night in Rice Lake.

Just after 11pm Sunday, Rice Lake police were sent to an apartment at 1030 South Main Street regarding an angry and belligerent man who told police he had a bomb.

After police arrived and evacuated adjacent apartments and homes, 44-year Joseph Zunker set himself on fire, then an explosion caused extensive damage to the apartments, which authorities say are a total loss, including the law offices of attorney Alan Sykes.

Zunker’s body was found in the ruble early yesterday morning.

A Rice Lake police officer responding to the call received minor injuries from flying debris, and one person living near the scene suffered a minor injury during the evacuation.

Over a dozen people in the burned-out apartments lost their possessions, and the Red Cross was called in to find places to live for those affected by the fire.
