COVID Case Numbers Continue to Climb

Wednesday November 25th, 2020 - The first recorded case of coronavirus in our region occurred nearly eight months ago but the majority of cases have happened in the last four weeks.

For the six county region of Barron, Burnett, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer, and Washburn Counties the first documented case of the virus happened on April 1st. The Wisconsin Department of Health Services latest numbers say there have been 8,267 total cases in the region since the pandemic began with 5,499 of them, or 66.5%, being recorded since October 28th. 292 people, almost all of them 60 or over with underlying health conditions, have passed away due to complications from the virus in the area with 195 of them, or 66.8%, occurring since October 28th.

Even with the explosion of cases most people in the region have not caught COVID-19. The 8,267 cases represents 5.5% of the more than 150,000 people that live in the six county area.
