Wednesday, June 3 -- The Sawyer County Sheriff reported that vandals attempted to burn the memorial marker of fallen deputy Michael Villiard. Deputies responded late Tuesday night to the site of the memorial in the Town of Couderay to find that someone had attempted to set the stone marker on fire. Villiard was killed in action in 1998 while responding to an emergency call. The sheriff's department is asking for assistance from the public in identifying the perpetrators of the vandalism.
