Wednesday, November 11 -- The Sawyer County Sheriff's Office says its deputies were involved in a pair of high-speed chases early last Saturday involving speeds exceeding 100mph. Just before 3am, deputies pursued a sedan in the Town of Bass Lake onto State Road 27/70, and then onto State Road 40. With the suspect vehicle bound for Rusk County, deputies there set up tire deflation devices which stopped the fleeing car. The driver, Steven Martinson Jr., 18, of Hayward, was taken into custody. His 17-year-old female passenger was turned over to her parents. Several hours later, deputies searching for an Ashland County theft suspect spotted the suspect driving his vehicle in the Town of Spider Lake. The chase on State Road 77 also edged into triple-digit speed before the vehicle crashed into another one in the City of Hayward. The suspect, Eriesse Whitehead, 26, of Hayward, fled on foot but was apprehended with assistance by a K9 unit.
