Local Breweries Can Still Serve On Site

A leading Republican legislator says local craft breweries, wineries and distilleries can relax now that a controversial proposal that would prevent them from serving their products directly to customers will not be included in the final state budget.

Earlier this month, a memo circulated in Madison suggested a new office should be established to crack down on enforcement of the state's three-tier liquor industry, taking regulatory control away from the Wisconsin Department of Revenue.

While no organization has claimed responsibility for the proposal, independent alcohol producers feared it was an attempt to stifle competition from tap rooms and craft breweries, distilleries and wineries.
