Monday January 11, 2021 - Minnesota health officials said a new strain of COVID-19 has been detected in the state. This variant of the coronavirus was first reported in the United Kingdom and is said to be more contagious, but not anymore serious than other versions.

Health officials said tests found the new strain in five residents. At least two had traveled recently, one did not and the other's travel history was not known. None of the five were hospitalized.

Initial studies show that the current COVID-19 vaccines are effective against this strain.

Minnesota Department of Health's director of infectious diseases Kris Ehresmann said the best measure of defense is to continue protective measures, like wearing face coverings, maintaining social distancing and avoiding large gatherings.
