Thursday, May 21, 2020 -- Polk County has recorded its first fatality from COVID-19. The county health department reported Tuesday that a county resident was exposed to the coronavirus through work in Minnesota. The resident tested positive on April 16 and passed away May 18 at a Twin Cities hospital.
The person's death was the second reported for residents of the six-county region comprising Barron, Burnett, Polk, Rusk, Sawyer and Washburn counties. As of this morning, the six counties have reported 28 cases of COVID-19 and two deaths.
Statewide, a spike of 528 cases yesterday reversed, at least temporarily, a downward trend in positive test results. Wisconsin has recorded 13,413 cases, with 481 deaths.
Langlade and Taylor counties, the last two of the state's 72 counties to report cases, each recorded their first case yesterday.
